UK public EV charging: contactless, price display and reliability rules

UK rules require clearer pricing and easier payment at public chargepoints. Drivers should still check parking fees, pre-authorisation holds and whether a charger meets the power their car can accept.

The charging element must be displayed in pence per kilowatt-hour, including applicable charging transaction fees. Parking or overstay charges can still sit outside that number, so check site signage as well as the charger screen or app.

Contactless should not require membership

Covered chargers must provide ad-hoc contactless access without forcing a pre-existing contract. Apps and RFID cards may still offer subscription prices, receipts or roaming, but should not be the only route where the contactless rule applies.

Power is not delivered speed

A 150 kW charger does not guarantee 150 kW into the battery. Vehicle limits, temperature, battery state of charge, site sharing and voltage all influence the charging curve.
