Why electric car insurance costs vary: UK buyer checklist

Insurance is priced for the driver and postcode as well as the car. Two EVs with similar list prices can produce very different quotes because repair methods, parts, performance and claims data differ.

The exact version matters

Motor power, wheels, sensors and trim can alter both risk and repair cost. Obtain quotes for the exact derivative rather than a cheaper version with the same model name. New models may also have less mature claims data.

Read EV-specific terms

Check whether the traction battery is covered when owned or leased, whether charging cables are treated as vehicle accessories and whether recovery includes a depleted battery. Confirm repair-network restrictions and courtesy-car terms.

Test the ownership scenario

Run comparable quotes before paying a non-refundable deposit. Include all regular drivers and honest mileage, parking and use. Recheck if the delivery date or registration changes.
