Electric car depreciation UK: how to compare the real cost

Depreciation is often the largest ownership cost, but it cannot be read from a single percentage. Transaction price, finance structure, incentives, mileage and the used market all change the outcome.

Discounts reset the starting point

A large manufacturer discount can reduce the real first-owner loss, while it can also lower used-market expectations. Compare what buyers actually pay, not only an old published list price.

PCP hides and reallocates risk

A guaranteed future value can protect against some downside if return conditions are met, but interest and mileage charges still matter. If you plan to keep the car, compare the total payable and final balloon with realistic used values.

Used buyers should price uncertainty

Check service history, charging capability, software support, remaining vehicle and battery warranty, tyre condition and repair access. A low asking price is not a saving if insurance or parts support makes ownership impractical.
