Electric car battery warranty: what UK buyers should check

An eight-year headline is not enough to compare battery cover. Buyers need the mileage cap, retained-capacity threshold, exclusions, claim process and transfer conditions for the exact UK model.

Check 1Years and mileage cap
Check 2Minimum retained capacity
Check 3Diagnostic and claim process
Check 4Transfer and service conditions

Separate failure from degradation

A warranty may cover a manufacturing defect while treating gradual capacity loss under a separate threshold. Find the written percentage, test method and remedy. “Battery warranty” does not always mean replacement for every reduction in range.

Read the exclusions

Damage, misuse, unauthorised repair, long-term storage at an unsuitable charge level or missing required inspections may affect a claim. Confirm whether software readings alone are sufficient or whether the manufacturer requires a workshop capacity test.

Used-car buyers need transfer evidence

Verify that cover follows the vehicle, that the service record satisfies the terms and that the warranty start date matches first registration. Ask a franchised repairer to confirm remaining cover in writing when possible.
